A Black Professor Trapped in Anti-Racist Hell

Each student read from a prepared statement about how the seminar perpetuated anti-black violence in its content and form, how the black students had been harmed, how I was guilty of countless microaggressions, including through my body language, and how students didn’t feel safe because I didn’t immediately correct views that failed to treat anti-blackness as the cause of all the world’s ills.

This might be just another lament about “woke” campus culture, and the loss of traditional educational virtues. But the seminar topic was “Race and the Limits of Law in America.” Four of the 6 weeks were focused on anti-black racism (the other two were on anti-immigrant and anti-indigenous racism). I am a black professor, I directed my university’s black-studies program, I lead anti-racism and transformative-justice workshops, and I have published books on anti-black racism and prison abolition. I live in a predominantly black neighborhood of Philadelphia, my daughter went to an Afrocentric school, and I am on the board of our local black cultural organization.

Like others on the left, I had been dismissive of criticisms of the current discourse on race in the United States. But now my thoughts turned to that moment in the 1970s when leftist organizations imploded, the need to match and raise the militancy of one’s comrades leading to a toxic culture filled with dogmatism and disillusion. How did this happen to a group of bright-eyed high school students?

This is why the Left is imploding and the Right ascendant.

The Twitter left ate each other up in the wake of the murder of that trans teen in the UK because the #SayHerName hashtag was used for her, and that was seen as grossly offensive to Black people, by appropriating and diluting their message.

The purity politics purges and the weaponisation of emotional fragility are destroying the Left.

Tangential. But why did "Contact" magazine choose to illustrate this article with a 100 year old photo of Cornell? A school that has zero to do with this story.

by Anonymousreply 2February 22, 2023 11:19 PM

Ah silly me. I needed to read the article for longer. It's a summer programme hosted at Cornell! My bad.

by Anonymousreply 3February 22, 2023 11:21 PM

I wouldn’t disagree, R1, but the Right (Q-anon, Florida, Proud Boys, etc.) has its own version of this going on. I also wouldn’t agree that the Right is ascendent, unless we are talking internationally. Both sides have their extremes, but the Left isn’t nearly as well armed as the Right.

by Anonymousreply 4February 22, 2023 11:24 PM

Plus they all seem so stupid and devoid of even common sense.

Thanks for posting an article from a German "conservative" "journal" operating less than a year that specializes in "tearing down wokeness" while using "dissident radical feminism" as an anti-trans tool to come after gays, you asshole OP.

Fuck you.

THIS is not the place to insert such trash. The medium is the message, and the message here is "I'm a crank who can't be bothered to cite reputable journals or news sources" because that's what I am.

[quote]How did this happen to a group of bright-eyed high school students?

Because we're teaching complex, nuanced concepts to a bunch of kids who never got one single second of critical thinking skills education in their lives.

Because teenagers and young adults are frequently still operating on a childlike understanding of morals and ethics, where things are either good or bad, and at that age they're going to try to fit complicated topics into their simplistic right-or-wrong worldview.

Because the media is so committed to flooding the zone with shit every day just to make a buck that everyone's brains have turned to mush as they realize there is no real source of unbiased, simple, truthful information anymore, and they rely more and more heavily on determining what's right or wrong based on their own feelings, emotions, and ideals.

Because the conservatives have moved things so far to the right that the instinctive response from a lot of people is to go to the far left, but we don't actually HAVE a far left in the U.S. as far as a true political organization goes, so these people are left to learn what "far left" means from people who have an agenda, and the next thing you know you've got classrooms of well-intentioned 20-year-olds who are screaming incoherent catchphrases they heard from some choad on TikTok named LeftistLiberator4Lyfe420.

by Anonymousreply 16February 23, 2023 2:11 PM

There was a special election in VA just a couple of days ago that makes it pretty clear that the right is not exactly "ascendant."

And this is the most disturbing part of all. The need to rattle off credentials/bona fides to gain entitlement to express an opinion, to deflect being shouted down/silenced. No different to fascist control of public discourse in Soviet Russia or Cultural Revolution China.

"During our discussion of incarceration, an Asian-American student cited federal inmate demographics: About 60 percent of those incarcerated are white. The black students said they were harmed. They had learned, in one of their workshops, that objective facts are a tool of white supremacy. Outside of the seminar, I was told, the black students had to devote a great deal of time to making right the harm that was inflicted on them by hearing prison statistics that were not about blacks. A few days later, the Asian-American student was expelled from the program. Similarly, after a week focused on the horrific violence, death, and dispossession inflicted on Native Americans, Keisha reported to me that the black students and their allies were harmed because we hadn’t focused sufficiently on anti-blackness. When I tried to explain that we had four weeks focused on anti-blackness coming soon, as indicated on the syllabus, she said the harm was urgent; it needed to be addressed immediately."

What's interesting about this phenomenon is that it's essentially turning all students into hedgehogs (to borrow from Isaiah Berlin) in their orientation. They can only see the world through a single lens -- in this case, race -- and all information much conform to a preconceived system.

Working in the academic sector over a long period of time has been interesting. There are some professors that are joining the alt right for various reasons. In some cases, it’s because their bosses went alt right as well and they are trying to save their jobs. In some cases (many) it’s professors who want to join into the cacophony of alt right talking points that are being given permission to do so with the current political climate. They are also constantly complaining to the disability offices on campus about what they see as physically disabled students being a problem.

These types of right winger professors will waste enormous amounts of time arguing with the disability office about how deaf students shouldn’t get captions, etc. All they do is complain and feign ignorance about disability laws. Case in point- a social work assistant professor in Connecticut telling deaf students they need EMDR to de program them from believing that they are deaf and the professor was claiming that it was a free speech issue. She was fired but that gives one a taste of what these clowns are doing to “own the libs”

R13 is the same lunatic who posted about 40 posts on another thread going on about the DL deleting her favorite hate threads. Here's the quality of her contributions:

Do you think datatlounge treats its grown-ass members like children? And to follow up my comment R122 here's the main problem with datalounge:

As you can see in this thread, there is a persistent troll who has left about a third to half of the responses, where he's using his main account as well as numerous sock-puppet accounts.

Unfortunately, there is no effective way to ban a troll from a thread given DL's technological limitations, so we're forced to let them run wild. This tech is ancient and is reminiscent of the early days of the internet. And it can work in theory, if everyone behaves, but a persistent troll can ruin the experience for everyone, as evidenced by what he is trying to do here.

Do you think datatlounge treats its grown-ass members like children? At this point in the thread, it's pretty much just the two main DL trolls posting their vitriol and nonsense.

I'm not even sure what to say about 168. His anti-woman screeds are simply unhinged and vile.

And the other one, 169, has probably posted around 100 comments in this thread using at least a half dozen sock-puppet accounts where he/she attacks and berates anyone and everyone who won't bend the knee to gender ideology and suck his hideous lady-cock.

And Buffalo Bill, I mean169, this video is for you, babe:

Do you think datatlounge treats its grown-ass members like children? R188 I agree with that assessment.

She doesn't seem like any gay dude I've ever met.

I just called her out on the thread that she started called "fake radical feminist" with my own assessment of her insanity and her nonsense larping as a gay dude.

She is absolutely not a gay man.

by Anonymousreply 36February 23, 2023 4:07 PM

R13:

Do you think datatlounge treats its grown-ass members like children? For whatever reason, DL has nuked the two threads that discussed Harry & Meghan's portrayal on a recent episode of South Park. Why? The threads about the New York Times recent spat with GLAAD/trans activists was nuked, as was the one about the South Dakota bill and another thread that was critical of GLAAD's practices.Numerous other threads on a variety of topics were also nuked in the last few weeks. And there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason behind these removals.

Do you think datatlounge treats its grown-ass members like children? R5 I had a feeling you might show up to my thread. How many hours a day do you spend on DL? Do you ever get off the internet and go outside? How many sock-puppet accounts do you have? And the most important question: Do you have a psychiatrist?

Do you think datatlounge treats its grown-ass members like children? R10 Can you tell me who the presidential candidates will be in 2024? Here's a question for you: Do you think it's right for DL to nuke discussions about these important issues?

Do you think datatlounge treats its grown-ass members like children? R18 You have made 7 replies in this thread so far. How about you give it a rest and go outside for some fresh air. And R19 you an unhinged freak. How about the two of you leave this thread so the rest of us can have a discussion.

Do you think datatlounge treats its grown-ass members like children? R24 I don't know who Sheila is. You're clearly having a manic episode, so I won't be responding to your comments going forward.

Do you think datatlounge treats its grown-ass members like children? R34 It is nuked, dumbass. Stop trying to cause trouble.

Do you think datatlounge treats its grown-ass members like children? R37 There was nothing "crazy" about the two South Park threads that were deleted. Do you think datatlounge treats its grown-ass members like children? Unfortunately, this post brought out the two worst people on DL as they have dominated the thread with nonsense. They are both severely mentally ill and are a couple of sad trolls. One of them, made a post called "random hipster pics" and then went on to post over 300 images in under a couple of hours. He/she was having a manic episode that night and I assume he's having another one now. The other troll, who says he's been here since 2004, which I believe, is abusive, aggressive, threatening and a sad/lonely shut-in. Unfortunately, there is no way to bar these two from the discussions. Other members, feel free to chime in and don't let these freaks ruin the discourse. Do you think datatlounge treats its grown-ass members like children? R43 I checked your history. This is your only post. Are you brand new to datalounge?

by Anonymousreply 37February 23, 2023 4:08 PM

Sure, I post shit. It's the DL. But this kind of "you're a troll" trolling precisely is the MAGA calling card and as this R13 et al. cunt keeps telling people to "walk on the grass" one can see it for what it is: a divisive, hate-mongered without one post containing any humor, camp value, irony or anything else except the screeds aligned with her very specific agenda.

by Anonymousreply 38February 23, 2023 4:10 PM

R36 WE DO NOT FUCKING CARE!!!! We know how to use ignore and comb through someone’s posts if we want to. Why don’t you use ignore and stop seeing threads you don’t agree with? Why are you so obsessed with controlling the narrative?

by Anonymousreply 39February 23, 2023 4:11 PM

r39, if someone's bringing up anti-trans troll talking points on a thread like r13 did, they deserve to get called out. If you don't like it then you need to ignore the people who call out trolls.

I'm not a fan of r36 posting everything r13 has said, that gets a little confusing and tedious, but if people on DL get to be huge stinking trolls 24/7, then others get to call them out. That's how it works.

by Anonymousreply 40February 23, 2023 4:15 PM

R40 go put Summer’s Eve on your “stinkin” cunt.

by Anonymousreply 41February 23, 2023 4:19 PM

And R41 is posting from multiple accounts, because the OP/R41 is posting the same language noted with the cited posts.

The fact remains that the source of the story on which this thread is based is from a GERMAN RIGHT-WING "JOURNAL" set up less than a year ago to attack LGBT+ people AND blacks. Conservatism doesn't sound like the maniacs here. MAGA does.

And they never stop, because they are deranged. And humorless. And lacking in the finer values that make the DL bearable.

by Anonymousreply 42February 23, 2023 4:24 PM

Aw, r39/r41, are you too delicate for Datalounge? Do you always cry when someone explains things to you?

It is shocking how many people like you (and r36, let's be honest here) log on and start constantly bitching at and insulting everyone, yet the second you experience even mild discomfort, you absolutely lose your shit.

by Anonymousreply 43February 23, 2023 4:25 PM

R39, because you and yours are lunatic pests who do not get to own this space.

There is no excuse for the material posted. None. Derangement is not commitment. It is a condition that requires self-awareness.

R43 is right, in a way, but misses the underlying point.

by Anonymousreply 45February 23, 2023 4:27 PM

The far left controls colleges ( with a few exceptions) and everyone knows it. The far right schools are total looney bins, whereas the other schools are generally fine, but allow the left loons to control the narrative.

by Anonymousreply 47February 23, 2023 4:29 PM

It bears repeating (and calling the DL a Z-list site shows the motives even more clearly):

A Black Professor Trapped in Anti-Racist Hell Each student read from a prepared statement about how the seminar perpetuated anti-black violence in its content and form, how the black students had been harmed, how I was guilty of countless microaggressions, including through my body language, and how students didn’t feel safe because I didn’t immediately correct views that failed to treat anti-blackness as the cause of all the world’s ills.

by Anonymousreply 57February 23, 2023 11:38 PM

R47, maybe "the left" controls colleges because Republicans aren't smart or educated. Conservatives aren't bright people

by Anonymousreply 58February 26, 2023 1:19 AM

The problem is young people are educated by bullshit today.

Like for example, the new trans / LGBTQRS+ movement isn’t based in academia or psychology. A lot of it was created through memes on Tumblr and Twitter and Reddit by teenagers. And sadly it’s been adopted by academia even though it’s never been truly analyzed or studied or rationalized. And campus policies conform to all of this.

So it’s just not surprising college kids think they’re smarter than professors, which is what this situation is.

by Anonymousreply 59February 26, 2023 1:44 AM

"This is why the Left is imploding and the Right ascendant. Your evidence for this is what?"

Apparently the most recent mid-term elections.

Also, the fact that this person probably doesn't know what "imploding" and "ascendant" mean.

by Anonymousreply 61February 26, 2023 2:02 AM

by Anonymousreply 62February 26, 2023 2:03 AM

R59 part of the issue as well is that almost every institution is bending over backwards to kiss student's asses. Having a space for debate is one thing, but too many won't enforce basic rules of respect in the classroom and will ditch professors with decades of experience just because some student gets their fee fees hurt about something.
