Carnes Hill: Shooting during armed robbery leads to arrest

A man has been arrested and another is on the run after an armed robbery at a shopping centre in Sydney’s west.

Officers rushed to a jewellery store inside Carnes Hill Marketplace shopping centre on Kurrajong Rd after reports of an armed robbery at 4:45pm.

Two men entered the store, smashing glass cabinet displays, before a shot was fired and the men fled the scene, police say.

The officers were directed towards a motorcycle outside the centre, where they found two men.

They apprehended and arrested a male pillion passenger, however the motorbike rider fled the scene.

Police seized a firearm and various items of jewellery in a search of the man.

A large-scale manhunt is now underway, with specialist police and officers from neighbouring areas assisting.

Police helicopters are in the area in a desperate search for the man.

There is no ongoing threat to public safety, police say.
