These Game of Thrones Baby Names are More Popular Than Ever
Game of Thrones, the hit show based on the book series by George R. R. Martin, is back for its final season. Now, it seems to be inspiring the next generation of baby names.
Since the release of the first series in 2011, there’s been a surge in Game of Thrones baby names. Now that the last series has finally hit our screens, baby names inspired by key characters and the actors who play them are more popular than ever.
In 2017, a record number of 76 baby girls were given the name Khaleesi. Meanwhile, the number of baby girls named Emilia – after Emelia Clark, who portrays the Dragon Queen – jumped from 925 in 2010 to 3,019 in 2016.
From royalty to music and sport, it’s long been known that the world of popular culture can influence the names we choose for our kids. According to research by Music Magpie, some of the biggest climbers in the last decade include Caleb, thanks to Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Folowill, Ivy – after Beyoncé and Jay Z’s daughter, and Darcie, perhaps following Dame Darcey Bussell’s stint on the Strictly Come Dancing judging panel.
We can also make an educated guess at what might be popular in years to come. Royalty is bound to influence the name charts, with both Meghan and Louis expected to see a spike. Plus, the return of Friends to our screens via Netflix could see Ross, Joey, Rachel and Phoebe receive a boost too.
